Gugulethu District Hospital Campaign

Screenshot 2026-06-15 at 12.10.26 PM.png

This campaign aims to mobilize and inform our communities and advocate for the establishment of a District Hospital in Gugulethu. In 2013, GF Joost Hospital was closed with the promise of an improved one taking its place. However, this promise was broken. Over ten years later, more than 150,000 residents of Gugulethu must travel long distances to another district hospital or resort to local clinics that lack proper resources to treat them. Currently, the closest hospitals are Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory and Mitchells Plain Hospital — two extremely overcrowded hospitals where people often wait days for care. As the Gugulethu population continues to increase, residents face a rise in diseases due to delayed treatment. We will not stop this campaign until the residents of Gugulethu receive the equality in health care that they deserve.

Community Health Centre

Since 2016, we have been having an issue with the Gugulethu Community Health Centre. Their pharmacy was struggling to handle the demand for medication from patients. This is because they had only one resident pharmacist in their clinic, so people spent hours waiting for their medication to be dispensed. Some even went home without receiving their medication and had to comeback the next day. So, as the movement we engaged the  facility manager and the Department of Health on this issue, as it affected people’s health and wellbeing. Through that engagement with them, we managed to pressure them to get another pharmacist for their dispensary. This alleviated the waiting time for medication to be dispensed to the patients, after they had been seen by the doctor. Because this also affected those who are employed and are using the facility. Because they had to take unpaid leave the next day after visiting the facility, if they had not received their medication the day before. Throughout this time, we have been engaging with the facility, to try and help with improving the working conditions of the staff, thereby improving the services delivered at the facility.

DATE

Dentistry

We also had the same problem with the dentistry, where they had only one dentist to cover a huge area of Gugulethu and surrounding areas and only on certain days he was available at the dentistry. So, this made life very difficult and dangerous for people who wanted to get their teeth extracted at the dentistry. People had to go and queue as early as 2am in the morning, in order to gain access to the clinic. As a maximum of 30 people were allowed per day at the dentistry. This put peoples live in danger, as they were a target of criminals during that time and mostly women were vulnerable to be targeted. We then again as the movement, decided to approach the department of health sub-district of Klipfontein about the issue. They first denied that there were people queuing in the early hours of the morning, to gain access to the dentistry. We then had to collect testimonials from people who were queuing at those times, so that we make a strong case to put forward to DOH officials. They then went and did their own investigation and found out that what we had been saying was true. They then had no choice but to allocate other dentists to the clinic, so that people can get access from Monday to Friday and increase the daily number of 30 to 60 patients per day. So, since this engagement, they have reverted to an appointment system, where people do not have to queue as early as 2am when they want to go to the dentist.
